Class 1: Explosives

Dangerous Goods
Produces an explosive or pyrotechnic effect by heat, light, sound, gas or smoke or combo of these.

General Information:

Class 1 covers substances and articles that can cause explosion, rapid release of gas or violent reaction. These materials are tightly regulated because of their extreme hazard potential. Class 1 has six divisions based on the kind and degree of explosive risk.

Under New Zealand regulations, handling of many Class 1 explosives requires a Controlled Substance License (CSL), and strict safety requirements must be followed in transport and handling. Controlled Substance License's (CSL) are issued by WorkSafe.

Class 1 Divisions:

  • Division 1.1 - Substances and articles which have a mass explosion hazard
  • Division 1.2 - Substances and articles which have a projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard
  • Division 1.3 - Substances and articles which have a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard or both.
  • Division 1.4 - Substances and articles which present no significant hazard.
  • Division 1.5 - Very insensitive substances which have a mass explosion hazard
  • Division 1.6 - Extremely insensitive articles which do not have a mass explosion hazard.

Main Hazards:

  • These goods may react violently if subjected to impact or friction.
  • They may explode or burn rapidly if exposed to heat.
  • Chain reactions if stored improperly or mixed with incompatible substances

Examples:

  • Fireworks and pyrotechnics.
  • Ammunition and cartridges.
  • Blasting explosives.
  • Detonators, igniters, fuses.
