Class 2.1 Flammable Gases

Dangerous Goods
Defined by their ability to ignite and burn when they come in contact with an ignition source.

General Information:

Class 2.1 materials are gases that can easily catch fire when mixed with air and exposed to an ignition source. These gases are typically stored under pressure in cylinders or tanks, and their flammability means they must be handled and transported with strict safety measures in place.

Due to the nature in which Flammable Gases (Class 2.1) must be stored, they are not assigned Packing Groups.

Main Hazards:

  • May burn readily or explode if heated.
  • May cause narcotic effects.
  • Liquefied gases may cause frostbite.
  • May cause asphyxiation in confined spaces.

Examples:

  • Lighters and lighter refills.
  • Acetylene for welding and brazing.
  • LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) used for forklifts and barbecues.
