Class 2.2 Non-Flammable, Non-Toxic Gases

Dangerous Goods
Class 2.2 despite not being flammable or toxic, still pose significant risk.

General Information:

Class 2.2 Non-Flammable Non-Toxic gases are neither flammable nor toxic, but they are still stored under pressure in cylinders or tanks, which can make them hazardous if handled incorrectly. There is also a potential risk for asphyxiation. These gases are often used for industrial, medical or refrigeration purposes.

Due to the nature in which Non-Flammable Non-Toxic Gases (Class 2.2) must be stored, they are not assigned Packing Groups.

Main Hazards:

  • May cause asphyxiation in confined spaces.
  • Liquefied gases may cause frostbite.
  • Liquefied oxygen may cause substances it contacts to become brittle.
  • May support combustion.

Examples:

  • Carbon dioxide found in soft drink dispensing machines.
  • Oxygen for hospitals and oxy-acetylene welding.
  • Compressed air.
  • Compressed nitrogen and argon for welding.
