Class 4.1: Flammable Solids

Dangerous Goods
Fire risks in solid form.

General Information:

Class 4.1 Flammable Solids are materials that ignite easily and burn intensely. They are often used in manufacturing and chemical processes and include flammable solids, self-reactive substances and desensitised explosives. Flammable solids present unique fire, reactivity or explosion hazards during transport.

Main Hazards:

  • Very easily ignited.
  • Major fire hazard.
  • May form an explosive mixture with oxidising substances.

Examples:

  • Fire lighters used to start fires in fireplaces, barbecues and campfires.
  • Matches used as an everyday ignition source for lighting fires, stoves and candles.
  • Sulphur power used in manufacturing, agriculture (fungicides) and in matches.
  • Some powdered metals such as aluminium powder which can be used for metal production, paints and fireworks.
  • Naphthalene which is found in mothballs as a chemical pesticide.
