Class 4.2: Spontaneously Combustible Hazardous Substances

General Information:

Class 4.2 Spontaneously Combustible is a classification that includes substances liable to spontaneous combustion. These substances will catch fire if exposed to air without any heat being applied (as in no other source of heat except from the heat of normal air.

Main Hazards:

  • May self-ignite on contact with air or water.
  • May ignite if subjected to friction.

Examples:

  • White or yellow phosphorous which can be used in manufacturing matches, fireworks and some chemicals.
  • Un-stabilised fish meal used as a high-protein supplement in animal feed and fertiliser.
  • Metal powders such as magnesium which can be used in alloy production, fireworks and electronics.
