Class 2.3: Toxic Gases

Dangerous Goods
Defined by their ability to cause death or injury through inhalation.

General Information:

Class 2.3 Toxic Gases are poisonous and can cause serious health effects if inhaled. Even small quantities can be harmful, so they require strict handling, storage and transport procedures to protect people and the environment. These are typically stored under pressure in cylinders or tanks, which adds the risk of a violent cylinder rupture or explosion if the container is damaged or exposed to heat.

Due to the nature in which Toxic Gases (Class 2.3) must be stored, they are not assigned Packing Groups.

Main Hazards:

  • High toxic by inhalation, can cause illness or death.
  • Liquefied gases may cause frostbite.
  • May cause severe irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory system.
  • Some gases are corrosive and can damage equipment or containers

Examples:

  • Methyl bromide and ethylene oxide for use in fumigation.
  • Chlorine for swimming pool water sanitation.
  • Ammonia for industrial freezing works.
  • Carbon monoxide used in industrial processes and a byproduct from internal combustion engines.
